“Life will be ok and people do care and will love you no matter what. Don’t be scared to pursue your dreams. Always go for what you want.”

Alimatu Dimonekene is an Award-winning Women and Girl’s Rights Advocate. She is a tireless activist who is dedicating her life’s purpose to enhancing the reproductive rights of women and girls especially those affected by harmful traditional practices such as female genital mutilation\cutting (FGM/C) with child and early forced marriage and exploitation.

Winner of the Rosie McGrath Activist 2018, Alimatu has also won the African Achievers Award 2017, for her work in raising the voices of African women and girls through empowering the next generation. She is also the Founder of ProjectACEi and Youth1Space leading platforms to engage, empower and educate young people around the issues of gender base violence and advocacy.

Noted as one of the 10 influential African Diaspora Women in the U.K. in 2018, she is also a proud mother to three wonderful children.

However, her path to living her passion had its challenges and shows how raw determination is sometimes all you’ve got.

Alimatu was born in Sierra Leone and moved to the UK as a young woman with no idea what the future had in store for her. One thing was certain though – she had a desire to work in Sierra Leone to improve the lives of all Sierra Leoneans where ever she could.

Alimatu’s passion to advocate for girl’s and women’s rights issues was borne out her faith as a Christian, her family background and personal life experiences. She was determined to make a difference. However, married at 22 years old and with a young family she struggled to achieve those goals at first; but never forgot what her mother had taught her at an early age – that success comes with determination.

So she pursued higher education and recalls her incredible mentors that encouraged her on this journey; and her willingness to engage on her world views which saw her become more tolerant and appreciative of life. She pursued a number of collaborative and partnership opportunities, including working in the Civil Service and Local Authority to gain further policy experience. She also volunteered briefly for the UN and other leading charities in the U.K. Determined to make a success of her life, Alimatu worked hard to live in her passion. She always knew she had the potential to pursue her dreams when her children became older. And that’s exactly what she did.

“Life will be ok and people do care and will love you no matter what. Don’t be scared to pursue your dreams. Always go for what you want.”

We are pleased to be able to share Alimatu’s journey with you. Alimatu recalls that she first came across Gitas Portal when she was invited by a friend to attend a talk by the founder and inspiration behind Gitas Portal – Mariatu. Unfortunately, she was unable to attend. However, she decided to visit our website and said she,

“I am just amazed at their passion to make women and girls feel great and feel confident through style and colours of the world. So, I made contact with Mariatu and visited their flagship store in South London. And as we say the rest is history.  I then decided that I will always wear a piece from their collection at every conference I was speaking or attending.

I love the brand because it promotes women in business. Seeks to empower and educate young people through its partnership work. It seeks to promote partisan trade which I love.

When I think Gitas Portal, I think – Incredible .”
